However gross this habit may seem, there actually may be some health benefits to it. Mucus is filled with bacteria, so blowing it out onto a tissue potentially risks getting into the air and getting other people sick. If you just swallow it… well, your stomach acid will take care of it.

Blowing your nose can also irritate it, causing the blood cells to swell up and cause even more potential problems than you already had. So maybe the Icelandic know what they’re doing after all, and we should try to blow our noses less. I’m still getting a tissue if it’s running, though.
