#21: Misdiagnoses Happen Too Often
It seems like everyone needs custom orthotics these days. Growing up, I never experienced foot problems, so I’ve never even seen a podiatrist, let alone have those strange shoe inserts. While this pervasive trend feels strange to me, I’m sure it’s based on real science and medicine. Reading this story, however, I wonder how often orthotics are given out as treatment for something else.
Misdiagnosis has serious consequences. In this case, gait issues were dismissed as foot problems, and they received orthotics. Instead, an untreated issue in the hip caused their legs to be different lengths! Doctors truly need to listen to the pain experienced by their patients in order to provide the care that we all deserve.
